Island Universe

There are so many web sites dedicated to astronomy.  One of my favorites is Astronomy Picture of the Day. You can check out the archive of images available from NASA as well as individual astrophysicists at http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html.

The colorful composite image shown above is Messier 106 by J. Ray GaBany.  Sometimes called an island universe, Messier 106 is a spiral galaxy around 30 thousand light-years across located only about 21 million light-years beyond the stars of the Milky Way.
